WWPT GOES PWYW

Pay-What-You-Will all season long! It’s a risky thing to do, but as producers of world premieres, our work is all about taking risks. From a new play to a bold choice onstage, we’re so often told without risk there’s no reward so we thought, “Why not?”

We’ll be honest - we’re a small theatre company here in Edmonton, but we have big dreams, and one of those dreams is to create a community around new Canadian works, all the while making theatre accessible to everyone. In the past, we’ve offered tickets on a sliding scale, and this year we have committed to focusing on community and inclusivity. Last season, we noticed that our Pay-What-You-Will nights were the first to sell out, this inspired us to begin an investigation. Our Artistic Producer, Heather Inglis, refers to a Rozsa Foundation study stating that the 70 percent of theatre-goers who aren’t, well, going to the theatre, find that financial considerations are the deciding factor. “I’d rather have people pay a little for their tickets than have empty seats … Full houses create the event —it just makes theatre more exciting for artists, and for the audiences,” says Heather.

WWPT believes that theatre holds power, and everybody should be able to experience it. Over the past 45 seasons, our audiences have been a pillar of support for us, and we’d like to offer them the same.

In theatre, the work is all about our audiences—you are why we do what we do, and what makes our work electric night after night. We invite seasoned patrons and new-comers alike to experience the rich artistic scene right in our backyards, without the financial barriers. For our 46th season, Saints and Rebels, we’ll take the risk—you sit back and enjoy!
